Self-Care Guidelines
Maximize the benefits of your treatment by following these simple recommendations.
Before Treatment
- Do not eat an unusually large meal immediately before or after your treatment.
- Do not over-exercise, engage in sexual activity, or consume alcoholic beverages within 6 hours before or after the treatment.
- Plan your activities so that after the treatment you can get some rest, or at least not have to be working at top performance. This is especially important for the first few visits.
- Continue to take any prescription medicines as directed by your regular doctor. Acupuncture can often reduce the need for certain medications, but you should always consult with your physician before changing your dosage.
During Treatment
- Relax. There is no need to be frightened. Ask your practitioner any questions you have along the way.
- Do not move or change your position abruptly. If you are uncomfortable, tell your practitioner.
- Some people experience dizziness, nausea, cold sweat, shortness of breath, or faintness during treatment. This often occurs if you are nervous. Inform your practitioner immediately if you feel any of these symptoms.
- You may feel a slight sensation (dull or heavy ache) around the needle site. This is a sign known as "De Qi" (arrival of Qi energy) and means the treatment is working.
* If you experience pain or discomfort, let your practitioner know immediately.
